The Green and Organic Advantage

Falkland Islands wool enjoys some of the greenest conditions to rear and shear sheep in the world. For over 100 years farmers have worked their farms to organic standards that would not be possible in more densely populated and developed countries where warmer climates and disease necessitate chemical intervention such as sheep dipping. The norm is to graze livestock over the natural landscape meaning that the sheep are not normally exposed to external chemicals such as fertilisers and no sheep dipping or mulesing takes place on the Islands. This means that wool processors will not find any organo-phosphates or other chemical residues in their effluent from these wools. In the future this Green Advantage will make Falkland Wool even more of a distinctive brand that can differentiate itself from the other commodity wools on the market.

Of specific interest to discerning buyers is that over the next few years the company will seek to offer industrial-sized quantities of certified organic wool to the wool processing trade, which if Australian predictions on global organic wool supply are correct could amount to approximately half of the total world supply of certified organic wool in the medium term, as Falkland farmers come out of conversion using the newly proposed Organic Certification scheme which will be overseen by the Soil Association.
